Sri Lanka Holiday Diary

  1. See Lanka

From the magnificent stupas at Anuradhapura to the street food of Colombo, from the Cave of Celestial Maidens to the beach at Galle, Sri Lanka offers many changes of scene.

Stories apart, what I did remember best about Sri Lanka, my mother asked me when I got home. "The lotus ponds of Anuradhapura and the lagoons of Jaffna," I replied. "And, mmm, the egg-hoppers in Colombo's cubby-hole eateries."....

  2. A road trip from Kandy to Meemure via Hunnasgiriya

This is a fast day trip from Kandy but my advice would be to spend at least three nights on this trip; two in Hunnasgiriya with the inclusion of a visit to the Nitro caves; and the third in Meemure with a trek to the top of Lakegala mountain.

The trip can be started from Colombo too although it involves a lot of driving, so an early start would be good from either Colombo or Kandy as you want to maximise your time ...

  3. Five reasons to visit Sri Lanka

This report covers tn the penultimate episode of his BBC series Indian Ocean, where Simon Reeve is taking viewers from Sri Lanka. Donít forget to tune in to BBC2 at 8pm this Sunday and, to get you in the mood, read our five reasons to visit Sri Lanka below. 1. For the wildlife 2. For the history and culture 3. For the beaches 4. For the food and drink 5. For the weather

  4. A Night Safari near Kumana National Park

The Kumana National Park and Bird Sanctuary is renowned for the wonderful wealth of birdlife, especially its large flocks of migratory waterfowl and wading birds. The park is 391 kilometres (243 miles) southeast of Colombo, on Sri Lankaís southeastern coast. Kumana is linked with the Yala National Park which was formerly known as Yala East National Park...

  5. A Teardrop of Paradise

Secluded beaches, lush jungles and a rich culture make Sri Lanka an island of bliss. Wildflower Cottage sits in the middle of hundreds of acres of tea, a tiny remnant of Rule Britannia, surrounded by terraces of sturdy green bushes on the slopes of Sri Lanka's hill country...

  6. Taprobane Island - The Gem of Paradise

One of the most beautiful islands, 200 yards off the Southern Coast in the centre of Weligama Bay, is definitely Taprobane Island upon which a stunning view of the Indian Ocean will stun your senses. Keeping in mind that there is nothing between the island or the South Pole, the destination is a green, tree-top island with an idyllic setting...

Divyaa Lagoon Resort opened in Kalpitiya

(so) The first star class luxury boutique hotel on the Dutch Bay, in the Tourism Zone of Kalpitiya, Divyaa Lagoon Resort was opened recently. Built on four acres, Divyaa Lagoon Resort nestles between the Dutch Bay Lagoon and the Dutch Bay.

Tropical Villas has its own private beach facing verandah and garden with a 15-ft-long private plunge pool. There is also private dining facility in the garden. Divyaa will also make special arrangements for guests to dine on the beach upon request.

Chairman of Divyaa Lagoon Resort Zarook Marikkar said, "Kalpitiya has been identified as a tourism haven with a lot of potential given the investment opportunities available. We are proud to be the first luxury boutique hotel in Kalpitiya and are confident that with our hotel we will be able to position the area as a top tourist destination in the country. We also recognise the need for protecting the environment".

The Safari Hotel, the perfect base

(so) The Safari Hotel is aptly named as it is the perfect base for safaris to the Yala National Park as well as being within easy driving distance to the Bundala Bird Sanctuary.

It is located on the banks of the Tissa Wewa, the king-made reservoir that is a paradise for birdlife and wonderful for a boat safari. For pilgrims it is the ideal place to stay, being within a short drive of Kataragama.

The 50 bedrooms share the distinctive features of a modern and stylish makeover. I found it difficult to believe that the bedroom I stayed in when The Safari hotel was the Tissa Resthouse has been transformed, like all the other rooms, with contemporary good taste into a pleasantly agreeable place to stay.
